ACC - 30 years of service and support

2012 Spring Coal Forum

"One faces the future with one's past."
-- Pearl S. Buck

This year ~ 2012 ~ we celebrate our 30th Anniversary. Throughout this year and into the future, we will continue to pursue our Association objectives, grounded in the strength of our original charter ~ to represent the interests of the full spectrum of the coal chain, from the hole-in-the-ground to the plug-in-the-wall. Those objectives include:
  • Supporting the business, marketing and management capabilities of American coal suppliers, coal consumers, coal transporters, energy traders and coal support service companies.
  • Advocating for coal as an economic, abundant and environmentally sound fuel source.
  • Supporting the activities and objectives of associations and organizations involved in advancing coal supply, consumption, transportation and trading
In this election year, the debate about priorities, costs and policies associated with energy, economics and the environment will be intense. ACC will contribute factual information to the discussion through our website, as well as through our ACC publications and social media outlets (www.coalblog.org, http://www.facebook.com/AmericanCoal).

I encourage our ACC members to take advantage of the one of the many benefits of membership by accessing the marketplace information available in the Members Page section of our website. You'll find a year-end membership report with an update on what's new for 2012, as well as recordings and presentations from our webcast and on-site conference programs.

Finally, for information on our upcoming conferences and archived conference information, please check out www.accevents.org.

As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions regarding our website. Let us know how else we can use the site to meet your business needs.

Cheers ~

EPA: Implementing MACT while CSAPR is blocked

For those who may have missed it, the EPA released the final version of its Utility MACT rule on December 21st. The rule was ostensibly designed to address the release of mercury emissions from large coal-fueled utility generation sources. [...]

At the same time as the EPA is pressing forward on the Utility MACT a federal appeals court issued a stay, blocking the January 1, 2012 implementation date for another important EPA rule. Pending further court review, the U.S. District Court of Appeals has blocked the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR), which rushed to set strict new limits on the release of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur dioxide (SOX).

A "death spiral"? Seriously?

I keep reading articles and hearing stories forecasting the death of the coal industry. While some might think that these are a new challenge, veterans of past lean spells will recognize the forecasts as an ongoing background noise that the industry must address.

I recently saw another article predicting doom for the coal industry. I responded to it on the Coalblog.

There's an old Rush song called "Circumstances" that contains a line,

Plus ça change
Plus c'est la même chose
The more that things change
The more they stay the same

I was reminded of that song when I happened across another anti-coal blog post this morning. The title of this post indicates the author's belief that the coal industry is in a "death spiral."

I've also questioned (with tongue placed firmly in my cheek) whether similar problems indicated the "death spiral" of the wind and renewables industry.

Carnegie-Krupp Template for Coal Deployment Optimisation (Pt. II)

Editor's Note: As part of the Coalblog's continuing commitment to bringing you new and innovative editorial and ideas, I have invited Walter James O'Brien to expand on his 2010 American Coal magazin article, "Carbon Compliance Using the Carnegie Model." In this new article, O'Brien expands on the theme of using CO2 to promote industrial development. Please feel free to comment and suggest other means of making CO2 pay.

Transforming green obstacles into profit centers with near-zero capital outlay can be done through intelligent deals-based outsourced capabilities and/or partnership agreements.  Expanding on an earlier essay on the Carnegie-Krupp paradigm for industrial development, there are a variety of ways of meeting shareholder demands while satisfying and exceeding the vagaries of environmental regulation.

Coalblog Posts: The costs of runaway regulation

With radical change becoming the norm for the energy industry -whether in the form of new regulations, updated technologies, changing policies, or funding options - it is essential to stay up to date on what is coming next.

Be sure to check out the Coalblog for regular updates and editorial from the ACC, as well as coal and energy sector companies. Here are links to just a few of the issues that we have covered since the last issue of American Coal Advisory

We have also posted several of the growing list of stories outlining the policy impacts and social and economic costs of the impending EPA Train Wreck.

Please contact Jason Hayes if your company has an interesting editorial, story, news release, or case study to feature in the ACC newsletters and on the Coalblog. We'd love to hear from you.

Good for you! - Black & Veatch building clean coal in Malaysia

Congratulations to ACC member, Black & Veatch on the news that they will be working with China National Machinery Import & Export Corp in Malaysia to build clean coal generation equipment at the Manjung Unit 4 power project.

B&V global energy business managing director for Middle East, India and East Asia, Dr. Hoe Wai Cheong, said Malaysia is going through a period of fantastic growth.

"The industry needs a large volume of power delivered on time and cost effectively," he said.

The plant in Manjung, Perak, will deliver a thousand megawatts of base load, cleaner coal power to Malaysia's growing industrial and commercial sectors by 2015.

The Un-Comfort Zone #41 ~ Good Stuff also Comes in Threes

A few years ago I was surfing the internet on a Friday afternoon when I discovered a contest asking amateurs to make TV commercials for a famous ketchup brand. The prize was several thousand dollars and your commercial would actually run on television. Instantly I had an idea for a romantic comedy in which ketchup brought two young lovers together. Romance was on my mind; I had recently started dating someone with whom I was very interested.

In this latest edition of The Un-comfort Zone, Robert Wilson considers the idea that making a commitment creates remarkable opportunities that never existed before. ACC members can click this link to finish reading this article. Click here to read archived editions of the Un-Comfort Zone.
